Face recognition: Microsoft distances itself from the start-up AnyVision

Microsoft has announced that it will distance itself from the Israeli facial recognition company AnyVision. Since external groups are difficult to control, the Redmond company would like to have such technology developed exclusively in-house in the future.

Microsoft originally acquired shares in AnyVision as part of the M12 risk fund. The Israeli start-up is working on a face recognition system that is supported by AI. The tracking software “Better Tomorrow” should be able to search for people in videos. However, the technology is controversial because it enables surveillance projects. The software has an uncontrollable potential for abuse.

For this reason, the Redmond company has now decided to sell all shares in AnyVision. In addition, investments should no longer be made in groups that work on similar, also controversial technologies.

So far, AnyVision has not officially approved the procedure ofMicrosoftvoiced. The Redmond company has also made no statements as to when the shares in the Israeli group should be sold to another company. It is also unknown to which company the shares are to be sold.

Microsoft is working on its own projects

However, Microsoft is not getting out of business entirely. While no more external facial recognition companies are investing in, the Redmond company is still developing its own technology. However, the products are not sold to governments that are considered undemocratic. The internal projects are used exclusively in the commercial and public areas.
