Dresden (dpa / sn) – Due to the corona protests, the number of extremism cases in Saxony is at a new high, according to an evaluation. Never before have the investigators had to deal with so many cases as in 2021, the “Leipziger Volkszeitung” reported on Wednesday with reference to figures from the Police Terrorism and Extremism Defense Center (PTAZ) at the State Criminal Police Office of Saxony. According to this, 1272 cases were processed in the previous year – more than twice as many as in 2020. At that time, there were 615 proceedings.

With 687 accused, significantly more suspects were also identified than in previous years. in 2020 and 2019, there were 400 and 351, respectively. At the same time, the clearance rate increased from 52 to 57 percent. Almost half of the cases do not fit into classic categories, the report said. The PTAZ identified a total of 529 corresponding extremism cases in 2021, compared to 194 in 2020.

“A growing challenge compared to previous years is, in particular, the phenomenon area “not to be assigned”,” is the assessment in a management report of the PTAZ. This results from measures to contain the coronavirus. The classic classification of extremism into right, left and foreign ideology no longer applies in this context.
