Warm summer weather and, of course, the nine-euro ticket again caused overcrowded regional trains in Lower Saxony on Whitsunday – just like the day before.
Deutsche Bahn warned on Sunday via Twitter: “Currently exceptionally high occupancy. Ride cannot be guaranteed.” The routes to and from the North Sea coast between Hanover and Norddeich and between Osnabrück and Bremerhaven were particularly affected. It sounded similar with the metronome: “Extremely high number of passengers: It is not possible to take bicycles with you,” it said there. Passengers should look for alternative connections, was the advice. The Metronom trains serve, among other things, the routes between Hamburg and Göttingen and between Hamburg and Bremen.
Crowded trains already on Saturday
Already on Saturday there had been a number of overcrowded trains and delays. Many rail customers could not find a seat, and travelers with bicycles were often unable to board regional trains. Some passengers even had to get off overcrowded trains. As expected, regional trains, especially to tourist destinations, were in very high demand on Saturday, said a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn on request. Above all, the regional trains in the direction of the Baltic Sea as well as to Hamburg and Bremen were in demand. “The chaos was to be expected,” said Karl-Peter Naumann from the Pro Bahn passenger association.
Pro Bahn warns: “Social responsibility of all travelers”
Naumann had already warned before the start of the Pentecost weekend not to disadvantage wheelchair users. “It is important that accessibility is respected on busy days. That is the social responsibility of all travelers,” he said Editorial network Germany. “It must not be the case that wheelchair users cannot get on the trains at the weekend because too many people use them and, for example, have their bicycles with them.”
