“Infants born to mothers infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus during pregnancy may be at high risk of developing neurodevelopmental deficits. So, we expected to find some changes in the neurodevelopment of infants whose mothers had coronavirus during pregnancy,” said Dr Dani Dumitriu, quoted from Fox News.
As a result, they were surprised to find no evidence at all to suggest that exposure to the coronavirus in utero is associated with neurodevelopmental deficits.
In contrast, infants in the womb exposed to the corona virus were actually associated with slightly lower scores in various areas, such as motor and social skills.
Researchers studied 255 babies born during the 2020 pandemic, of whom 45 percent were exposed to the coronavirus while in the womb.
Then, the researchers compared the child development scores among these babies with 62 other babies born before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study found babies born during the 2020 pandemic had lower gross motor skills, fine motor skills, and problem solving scores compared to children born before the pandemic, regardless of whether they were exposed to the virus or not.
This study has several limitations, among others, it was only conducted in one location in New York City when the corona virus became the epicenter.
However, a report found that viral illness during pregnancy can increase the risk of neurodevelopmental delay by activating the immune system. In turn, this can affect a child’s brain development.
Other studies have also shown that the coronavirus is associated with health and birth complications for pregnant mother, shows that babies born to mothers exposed to the corona virus have a high risk of low birth weight.
