25 Swiss doctors and experts published an open letter at the start of the Federal Council conference on Friday. In it, they call on the executive to declare the “extraordinary situation”. “Every day counts,” it says in the letter.
–
The Federal Council then tightened the existing measures. Close the schools. Entry from Italy is restricted. Events with more than 100 people are prohibited.
–
Adriano Aguzzi is not at all satisfied with that. The 60-year-old is one of the authors of the open letter and director of the Institute for Neuropathology at the University Hospital Zurich. “The measures are a mini lockdown. You bring too little. The Federal Council shows that it still misjudges the seriousness of the situation, »he told the science magazine “Higgs”.
–
“Have the feeling that Switzerland is without a leader”
Only rigorous measures like those in Italy are now appropriate, says the researcher. “Who is the Federal Council actually listening to?” Asks Aguzzi. «I have the feeling that Switzerland is completely without a leader. That will cost a lot more lives. » With a proper shutdown, that could be prevented, says Aguzzi.
–
In Switzerland, for example, bars and restaurants can remain open if they do not accommodate more than 50 people. “This is absurd,” says Aguzzi to the magazine. The expert explains: According to statistics, the likelihood of infection increases every day and was already 21 percent on Friday.
–
That means: Every fifth gathering of 20 people will spread the infection. «And the Federal Council admits 50 people. That leads directly to the catastrophe, »says Aguzzi. And demands: “It is essential that all stores except for food and pharmacies are closed immediately and that only one person enters the store.”
–
Aguzzi would go to jail for research
Aguzzi is also irritated by the current bureaucracy on the part of the cantonal veterinary office. The neuropathologist needs six mice for a corona study. “It’s a cat-and-mouse game between researchers and animal rights activists,” says Aguzzi.
–
Aguzzi’s patience breaks. «I submit the application on Monday and give the cantonal veterinarian a week to approve it. Then I start. » Even without a permit. «If you want to prevent me, the cantonal police have to storm my laboratory. And I’m ready to go to jail for that, ”says Aguzzi.

That means the “extraordinary situation”
The Federal Council already had one on February 28 «Special location» proclaimed in accordance with the Epidemic Act. This means that the Federal Council may order special measures after consulting the cantons. For example, limiting the number of visitors to public events. A corresponding hearing must therefore take place in order to take further measures.
However, the Federal Council can override the cantons – by passing one «Exceptional location» calls out. This would authorize the Federal Council under the Epidemic Act to order “the necessary measures for the entire country or for individual parts of the country”. This is what Swiss doctors and experts are now demanding.
However, the law leaves open what specific measures these are. These must be within the framework of Swiss law.

Coronavirus, Sars-Cov-2, Covid-19 – What is what?
—
The corona pandemic is confused about terms. These three names always get mixed up:
Corona virus: Corona viruses are a family of viruses. These can affect both animals and humans and trigger different symptoms. Corona refers to its crown-like extensions.
Sars-Cov-2: In January 2020, a new corona virus was identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Sars-Cov stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus. Because it belongs to the same species as the coronavirus in the Sars epidemic in 2002 and 2003, it received the number 2.
Covid-19: The Sars-Cov-2 triggers respiratory disease in certain cases. This is known as Covid-19, i.e. coronavirus disease. The number 19 refers to 2019, when the disease was diagnosed for the first time. Symptoms include severe pneumonia.
