Iran recently accused of assisting Hamas devise a plan to attack Israel.
Ebrahim Raisi’s government has also been accused by a number of parties of pouring funds into the group.
Both parties have the same enemy, namely Israel. Apart from that, what is the actual relationship between Hamas and Iran?
The relationship between Hamas and Iran was in the spotlight after the United States media, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), released a report which said that the Iranian Armed Forces (IRGC) helped Hamas plan to attack Palestine.
In the report, members of the Iranian military have been collaborating with Hamas since last August. He helped Hamas plan complex operations involving air, land and sea attacks.
The details of the operation were then refined in several meetings in Beirut, Lebanon. This meeting involved officials from the IRGC and four Iran-backed militant groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah.
Iran denies these accusations. Iran’s representative at the UN said Hamas’ decision to carry out the attack was their own.
According to reports CNN, Hamas has ambiguous relations with Iran. In recent years, Hamas has even turned against Iran due to its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, during the country’s civil war.
Syria’s civil war pits Assad and his allies, most of whom are minority Alawites and Shiites, against an opposition movement made up mostly of Sunni Muslims.
Hamas is a Sunni organization, while the Iranian resistance axis is mostly Shia.
However, the rift began to end when Syria normalized relations with powerful countries in the region such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The Shia-Sunni proxy war ended. This then made Iran and Hamas shift their focus to Israel.
