– Even experienced mountain people make mistakes – VG

During a trip on the mountain Børtind in Bodø last year, Jostein stumbled and fell down the mountainside. On its Facebook page, 330 Squadron asks people to show caution in the mountains.

– I felt the panic, and thought “now it must stop, otherwise it goes really wrong”, says 23-year-old Jostein in an interview with TV2. Jostein’s fellow student Jordy tells the channel that he thought he saw his friend fall to his death.

– Jostein has a lot of experience in the mountains and last summer was to take a fellow student on a summit trip. On the way down from the mountain he stumbled over a rock and fell down the mountainside, writes 330 Squadron in a post on Facebook.

His fellow student filmed Jostein as he fell.

Now the rescue squadron has shared the dramatic video of the fall, hoping that both experienced and inexperienced hikers are careful in the mountains.

“Bloody and painful”

The squadron has shared a statement from Jostein, who himself wants the video to show how fast accidents can happen when you are on a trip. He describes the incident as follows:

“When I hit the ground, I was at first embarrassed because I had fallen, but then I felt the weightlessness and realized that the fall was not over. I felt a new blow to my body, so weightlessness. The speed accelerated.

The fourth time I hit the ground I stop. The body is bloody and sore. The T-shirt is torn to pieces and I am only a few meters from a mountainside that disappears into nowhere.

My friend Jordy was brave and climbed gently to the scene to help me. Together we called for help. “

– When we saw the helicopter, it felt very good, he says to TV2.

Encourages caution

Rescuer Torgeir Kjus in 330 Squadron says to NRK that it is common for people to stumble in the mountains, and that the mission was not very dramatic.

– But it was disgusting to see the video in retrospect, he says to NRK.

– We want to show how fast it is done to make mistakes in the mountains. Even well-experienced mountain people make mistakes, says press and information adviser Sigurd Tonning-Olsen at Ørland airport to VG.

– People must take it easy in the mountains. It is especially this year when there are so many people traveling. That is why we ask people to be careful, he says.

Fortunately for Jostein, the fall stopped when he hit a mountain ledge. Had he not done so, the outcome could have been far worse. Instead, he escaped unharmed.

– He was very lucky and stopped two meters from the edge of the cliff, the squadron writes in the Facebook post.

330 Squadron is part of the Air Force, and operator of the state’s rescue helicopters.
