The producer of the victorious Bilan, Jan Rudkovskaya, is “disappointed, but does not lose hope”
The meeting of the heads of delegations of the countries participating in the competition on March 9 in Rotterdam, which was a formidable deadline for each country to not only decide on the participant, but also present the song and the official video, immediately went awry because of the coronavirus. Representatives of 16 countries refused to come, including even the authorities. Eurovision supervisor Norwegian Jon Ola Sand appeared in front of desperate daredevils who risked arriving in the port city of Rotterdam, in the elegant frame of a fashionable plasma TV – via video link. So far, the Rotterdam authorities and the leadership of the competition are more concerned not so much with strict observance of the rules, but rather with the fate of the event itself, which apparently helped the Russian delegation somehow agree on a “slight delay” with the official publication of the song and video number. Well, at least they met the deadlines with the candidacy.
And the candidacy – the Little Big group – immediately made a lot of noise, of course, and not to say nothing. The most exported Russian music top product to date, whose Skibidi video clip has become an international hit, caused a stir among the Eurovision community and immediately cemented Russia in the top three. A piece of the Uno song, which in the unintelligible demo format was played on March 2 in the program “Time”, only kindled passions and expectations. Finally, the song and full video appeared on the evening air on March 12th.
Latin rhythms, angular exaggerated dances, trashy grotesque images of artists, a funny fat man who tried to grimace as ridiculously as possible – all in the spirit and trends of Little Big. Unconditional incendiary, especially against the background of the incredibly mortal longing that most of the songs and participants of the current contest represent. However, from all this buffoonery sipped some extortion and tension. It was impressed that the main highlight of the musicians – sincerity, which permeated all their incomparable art-satirical exercises, this time disappeared somewhere.
Perhaps the expectations due to the bright background of the group did not fully coincide with the application presented in the end. Perhaps the unexpectedness of the group’s assignment to the Europass played a role, as frontman Ilya Prusikin told in an interview with MK, which in turn led to a rush to choose a song, work on it and a video clip, as well as a protracted pause with the premiere . In any case, there are still two months ahead, for which you can polish a lot and even make the audience try out the musical highlight of the song so that it can also be swallowed.
Of course, the reaction of bloggers and observers was very different: from “wow, how cool!” or “I like these Russian Latino-style sounds!” to “complete g …” and “expect more.” At the bookmakers, in turn, the first reaction was not very optimistic, but not tragic so far: right after the premiere, Russia rolled down, falling out of the top three, but the fall quickly stopped at the fifth line, where it froze for now. Just like a ruble in these turbulent days. Swiss Little Gjon’s Tears (song Repondez-moi), Icelanders Dadi & Gagnamagnid (Think About Things), Lithuanians The Roop (On Fire) and today’s forecast leader Bulgarian singer Victoria with fantasy pop ballad Tears Getting Sober are ahead of Little Big.
MK asked about the choice of Little Big and their song Uno from Yana Rudkovskaya, the only producer in Russia who managed with her artist Dima Bilan and more than the controversial, as it seemed then, Believe song to win Eurovision in 2008 in Belgrade . Her reaction, like that of the bookmakers, turned out to be contradictory: “I am somehow disappointed,” our Lady Roux said discouragedly. Asked a clarifying question:
– Yana, you, like no one else, know a lot about Euro sausage scraps, judging by your result with Bilan. If the decision was yours, would you be lucky to have such a song for the contest?
– Let’s start over. First of all, I really like the candidacy of Little Big. They are a hot cake, they are at the peak of popularity – not like t.A.T.u (in 2003), who were already on the decline and they were taken (to the contest). Recently, I was at a performance by children in a large arena in Moscow and was very impressed. In general, I am very impressed with their global hits, which everyone listens to and thanks to which they became popular. So I would vote with all my limbs for their candidacy. This is probably the best choice for today. Fashionable, stylish, unlike anyone else, trendy, trashy, which is great. Since, in my opinion, such a fun, dancing, incendiary song should win this time – after the Dutch ballad last year (Arcade performed by Duncan Lawrence) … But the Uno song a little disappointed me. The guys have real megahits, but this song, in my opinion, is somewhat weaker. I was expecting some kind of super-action movie. The song is not bad, it’s a dance, but for me it’s not a hit. Although due to their originality, extravagance, originality, they will certainly be in the top of the competition, but is it possible to win with this song, I’m not very sure yet. In any case, it will not be easy.
“Well, to be honest, except you and me, no one believed in Bilan’s victory either.” So it’s not evening yet!
