The platform game Ori and the Blind Forest came out quite a few years ago. Made by Moon Studios, l. A developer without a studio, but with a team of developers who were working on the game all over the world, in their own room. And with success, because the first Ori was a huge surprise, a real sleeper hit. Media and gamers lacked superlatives to praise this literally and figuratively fantastic platformer. And now, after quite some delay, there is the successor: Ori and the Will of the Wisps.
Part 1 was already heartbreaking
Skate and JJ were completely enchanted by the first part. The game looked beautiful, and the suffering of the vulnerable little creature Ori, who lost his mother, cut them both. Bambi in optima forma. Moon Studios added an inventive and very challenging form of platform action to this. The result was a beautiful game that according to the two could have been made by Nintendo. You can’t actually get a bigger compliment.
Is the new part getting so fat again?
What has Moon Studios all designed not to make Will of the Wisps feel like an easy going repeat exercise? Because that trap is always lurking in successful sequels. Have new gameplay elements been added to the game or do they mainly think “never change a winning team”? And, very importantly, is Ori and the Will of the Wisps able to hit the two presenters again? Or is the surprise just gone. Skate and JJ are two true Ori fans. They combed part 1 from A to Z. You can’t wish for a better team to review this Xbox (and PC) exclusive. And they did that, for more than half an hour, decorated with beautiful footage of Skate’s playing session.
