EU budget. Donald Tusk on the negotiations: PiS compromised itself and Poland

On Thursday, EU leaders reached an agreement on the future EU budget. The completed negotiations were commented on by Donald Tusk. – PiS has compromised itself and, unfortunately, Poland. In fact, it fought to break the rule of law with impunity, said the former prime minister. He also referred to the protests against the tightening of the abortion law.

On Thursday, at the two-day summit of the European Union, country leaders agreed on the Community’s budgetary framework for 2021-2027. In the coming years, Poland will receive as much as EUR 770 billion from these funds. Former Prime Minister Donald Tusk was asked about the finalization of the negotiations.

– Fortunately, we are still members of the EU. We feel that it was a good end to this fight, the battle for the EU budget. As always, different actors of this show will have different opinions on what happened, but what matters is the essence of what happened – said Tusk on Friday in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24.

The chairman of the European People’s Party stressed that “it is better for Poles that they managed to obtain the approved budget”. – Lots of money for many years plus a gigantic reconstruction fund, which is to help overcome the crisis after the pandemic – summed up the final of Thursday’s talks at the EU summit.

EU budget. Tusk evaluates PiS. “Nothing to negotiate”

According to Donald Tusk, the compromise brought from Brussels by Prime Minister Morawiecki “is a success for all those who wanted money and wanted the rule of law”. The former head of the Polish government also severely criticized PiS politicians, headed by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. – In fact, PiS fought to break the rule of law with impunity and threatened other partners that it would block the possibility of rebuilding the economy. And it was received with disgust and indignation – he added.

– The rule of law mechanism has also been activated. What has been achieved, even if it takes the form of a compromise, is that a certain corset can be put on by governments that violate the rule of law, said Tusk, referring to the governments of Poland and Hungary.

He made it clear that what Law and Justice has achieved in Brussels looks quite different than the facts that politicians in the ruling camp are now presenting in the media. – There is no doubt that the propaganda of this great PiS victory has little to do with the truth – he stressed.

– They got exactly what was. They have not negotiated anything on the financial resources. They received something that is a traditional method of working in the EU – argued the head of the EPP. In his opinion, “Morawiecki came to Brussels screaming ‘sovereignty’, and then he indisputably accepted the dictate from Berlin.”

Women’s strike. Tusk hits Kaczyński. “These are women’s political boxers”

Protests against the ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal on the tightening of the abortion law have been ongoing in Poland for many weeks. The demonstrators demand that the ruling be withdrawn. – The fact that Kaczyński provoked women to take to the streets also has a personal reason – explained Tusk.

In his opinion, PiS policymakers “are actually like the heroes of a Swedish crime fiction about men who hate women.” “They lack empathy and understanding of the female perspective,” said the former prime minister, calling politicians from the United Right “political female boxers.”

And what does Donald Tusk think about tightening the abortion law? – I have always said about the abortion compromise that it has a political advantage, not a substantive one, because it did not resolve moral and life dilemmas. He largely protected Poland from the sharp conflict on this issue. Now it does not exist anymore, it has been abolished by PiS – he said.

The former president of the European Council also criticized the actions of the police, which have been suppressing protests more brutally in recent days. – They do it with no satisfaction. They do not want to be seen as the brutal arm of the ruling party. This is ruining the reputation of the police, which we will also need after PiS – he added.

Tusk was also asked about a COVID vaccine. Is the politician going to get vaccinated? – Of course. I appeal to everyone – the risk of being vaccinated is a thousand times lower than that resulting from a pandemic – he argued.
