More than 400,000 New Yorkers participated in the Democratic primary on June 22, to nominate who will undoubtedly become the next mayor of their city. While the election results are not yet known, former Republican Eric Adams is currently in the lead, with at least 30% of the vote in his favor.
“Can Eric Adams keep his lead?” wonders the New York Magazine the day after the New York Democratic primary for the November municipal election. The election’s favorite candidate, a 60-year-old former black police officer, was named the first choice by at least 30% of voters, according to early estimates. During the campaign, this former Republican passed to the left was notably noted for his proposals to fight crime and his refusal to condemn the police.
But these preliminary results are far from definitive, nuance the magazine. “Neck to neck for second place, within reach of Eric Adams, we find Maya Wiley and Kathryn Garcia.” The first, a black lawyer specializing in civil rights, benefits in particular from the support of the left wing of the Party.
