JAKARTA – Instagram asking some users to provide selfie videos showing different angles of their faces to verify that they are real users.
Quoted from The Verge, Wednesday (11/17/2021), social networks have long struggled to eradicate bot accounts that can leave spam messages, harass people, or are used to increase the number of likes and followers.
According to social media consultant Matt Navarra, it’s likely that Meta is trying this feature out to help anticipate the prevalence of bot accounts on its platform.

According to XDA Developers, the company started testing the feature last year but ran into technical issues. Some users have reported being asked to take a selfie video to verify their account.
Another social media consultant, Bettina Makalintal posted a screenshot of how users go Instagram take selfie videos. This confirms that Instagram actually introduced selfie videos to perform user verification.
It’s unclear if this feature is being tested or is rolling out slowly. Meta itself did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the feature or its launch.
This move may come as a surprise to some, given Meta’s recent announcement that the company will be turning off one of its Facial Recognition features.

However, the company is only turning off certain Facebook features, not the use of facial recognition Meta overall.
The message at the bottom of the screenshot also implies that the feature will not use facial recognition at all and that the video will be deleted after 30 days.
