Environment. The “Planet score” hits the shelves this summer

Beneath the labels, politics. Promulgated in 2021, the Climate law plans to impose environmental labeling on all food products before 2026, in the spirit of Nutri-score. Whereas the environment agency (Ademe) is still working on the detailsone of the ongoing experiments is already making its way to stores: le Planet scoredeveloped by the Technical Institute of Organic Agriculture (Itab) and supported by distributors and manufacturers.

“From the summer of 2022, the Planet-score will appear on the packaging of our products”, indicates Benoit Drouin, vice-president of Les Fermiers de Loué. Similarly, announces Alix Renaud, development manager at Olga (ex-Triballat-Noyal), Sojade consumers will soon be able to see this label, which indicates the environmental impact of food products on the environment, “on all lids of 400 g jars in more than thirty countries”.

In stores or online?

Other option: show only the score on the internet, as Monoprix or Franprix already do. But “Display on packaging is really ideal”, supports Sabine Bonnot, president of Itab. On this point, the report sent by the government to parliamentarians in January remains vague. If posting will be mandatory, the authors recommend “a certain flexibility as to the support”. Online or on the shelves, manufacturers could have a choice.

While waiting for Ademe and the government to define a precise framework, the Planet score is being distributed in Europe. The French initiative would interest NGOs, companies and members of the government in Germany, Italy or the Netherlands.
