According to a source from the Judicial Court of Chaves, two of the detainees, businessmen in the field of construction, with companies working in Portugal, France and Belgium with more than 100 workers, were sentenced to pay a fine of 6000 euros each. The other two detainees, employees of businessmen, will pay 1800 euros.

One of the bosses explained to the Lusa agency that, when they returned to Portugal, the four decided to rent a house in the Ribeira de Pena region to “comply with the quarantine” and “protect family members”, leaving “just for shopping”. “On the first day we arrived, we had a visit from GNR to notify us of the quarantine. We asked if there was any way to receive food, some delivery company, such as UberEats and Glovo, and they told us that there was nothing,” he said.

When they went by car to Chaves to shop, only one left the vehicle and “properly protected with a mask, gloves and disinfectant gel”, he also said, pointing out that this case should be seen “on the positive side”, because the group had “rented a house to quarantine and not contaminate anyone”.

“In view of this situation, it was urgent to clarify the people who are returning to Portugal regarding the purchase of food and inform whether or not they can leave the house to buy food”, he stressed.

The four men, who work in Belgium, were detained by the PSP in Chaves for “disobedience and disrespect for the quarantine that was imposed,” a police source told the Lusa news agency on Wednesday. According to the commander of the Chaves division, Luís Alves, the emigrants, residing in Ribeira de Pena and aged between 19 and 46, entered Portuguese territory on March 22 and were notified by the GNR present on the border to remain in quarantine. during the 14 days determined by law.
