Elon Musk spoke to competitors about electromobility at a Volkswagen meeting

Over the weekend, the head of the American electric car manufacturer Tesla, Elon Musk, addressed two hundred leaders of a competing German company, Volkswagen, via a video call at their meeting in the Austrian mountain resort of Alpbach. He spoke, for example, of Volkswagen’s efforts to switch to electric cars, its managerial style or the current problems in supply chains and production, the Bloomberg agency wrote.

According to a spokesman for the Volkswagen Group, Muska was invited by the Group’s head, Herbert Diess. “Elon Musk joined us as a surprise guest via video call tonight. I’m glad to hear that even our strongest competitor believes that we will succeed in the transformation if we work hard on it,” Diess said on LinkedIn.

Volkswagen’s goal is to replace Tesla’s competitor as the world’s largest electric car manufacturer. The German group wants to increase the share of fully electric cars in its total car sales to at least 70 percent in Europe and at least 50 percent in North America and China by 2030. The Škoda Auto carmaker is also part of the concern.

Tesla is now awaiting final approval for its new factory, which it is building near Berlin. The carmaker wants to initially produce 150,000 electric cars a year in its first European plant.
