Elementary school students don’t dream of being a YouTuber… No. 1 in the desired job changed by Corona

– In the elementary school student’s preferred job ranking, doctors rose to second place, beating YouTubers (creators) and teachers. The number of middle and high school students hoping to become doctors, nurses, and life science researchers has also increased. The spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) seems to have affected students’ career hopes as well.

The Ministry of Education and Korea Vocational Competency Development Institute announced on the 23rd the current status of career education in elementary and secondary schools, which surveyed 23,23 students of 6th grade elementary school, 3rd grade junior high school, and 2nd grade high school from July to October last year.

Students’ interest in the health and medical fields increased from the previous year. Doctors ranked 4th in the desired job for elementary school students and 11th in the desired job for high school students in 2019. Last year, they jumped to 2nd and 5th, respectively. In the case of high school students, the 2nd and 3rd places for the desired job were both in the health and medical fields. In the previous year, the second place was a police officer and the third place was a nurse. Nurses are also popular among middle school students (10th in 2019 → 8th in 2020).

The popularity of doctors, nurses, and scientists increases, and flight attendants are more popular.

– As in last year, the number 1 job in elementary school students’ hopes was an athlete. Second place is doctor, and third place is teacher. Creators, who were ranked 3rd in the 2019 survey, have come down to 4th this time.

– The job that the middle school student wants to do is a teacher, a doctor in the second, and a policeman in the third place. High school students also ranked first in teachers, second in nurses, and third in life and natural scientists and researchers.

In the 2019 survey of aircraft crew, junior high school students ranked 12th and high school students ranked 8th, which was very popular. On the other hand, the popularity of soldiers increased, and both middle and high school students ranked fourth.

Among middle school students, the popularity of public servants increased (8th in 2019 → 6th in 2020), and the popularity of beauty designers (5th → 7th) and executives (11th → 13th) slightly declined. High school students were less popular with police officers (2nd → 6th), computer engineers and software developers (4th → 7th), and beauty designers (12th → 8th) and marketing experts (20th → 15th) increased in popularity.

Decreased concentration of hope for a specific job… Diversification of desired jobs

– It was found that the degree of concentration in which hopes were concentrated on a specific job decreased gradually, and students were hoping for more diverse jobs. The cumulative percentage of the top 10 for the desired job is 48.8% for elementary school students, 39.7% for middle school students, and 34% for high school students. Five years ago, this ratio was 52.7% in elementary school, 41.7% in middle school, and 40.9% in high school. More than half of elementary school students chose their future hopes out of 10 jobs, but now more students are hoping for jobs that are not in the top 10.

Corona 19 has also changed the way teachers are counseling on career paths. In 2019, more than half of middle and high school students gave group counseling, but last year it decreased to 48.2% in middle schools and 45.3% in high schools. Instead, it was found that telephone counseling and online counseling using web and social media increased significantly.
