Elections in De Bilt not over yet: council decides to recount all votes | Municipal elections Utrecht

The municipality of De Bilt will recount all votes cast for the municipal elections. The VVD asked for this after suspicions arose about mistakes made during the procedure.

According to the liberals, the mistakes could have consequences for the distribution of seats. There is in fact a difference of only five votes that means that the remaining seat goes to GroenLinks and not to the VVD.

The liberals point out that the number of invalid ballots this year is much lower than in 2018. Moreover, there are large differences between the polling stations. The VVD also notes that many corrections have been made in many court reports.

All this together makes it necessary, according to party chairman De Jong Schouwenburg, to recount all votes, he explained during a city council meeting on Thursday evening. “A recount does ultimate justice to the votes cast by the voters. Doubt is not good for the voter and council. People can be tired at the end of the day which increases the chances of making mistakes while counting. That’s human.”

No illegalities

At GroenLinks, there is no need for a repetition of the procedure and expressed its confidence in the central electoral committee. He found no irregularities.

Mayor Potters did not take a position and merely pointed to the options available to the city council. After a short debate, he indeed decided to recount. “Trust is everything. A recount can never have negative consequences,” said PvdA party leader Hagedoorn.

The recount is Friday in the HF White Center in De Bilt. The final result will be announced by the city council next Tuesday.

De Bilt is the second municipality in the province of Utrecht to recount the votes; Rhenen previously decided to do so as well.
