On election Sunday, voters in North Rhine-Westphalia will decide who will represent them in the Düsseldorf state parliament for the next five years. With their vote, they determine which party will have what share of power in the country’s parliament. NRW is divided into 128 constituencies – one of them is the Cologne 6 constituency. It includes parts of the city center with Altstadt-Süd and Altstadt-Nord, Neustadt-Nord and Deutz as well as Kalk with Humboldt/Gremberg, Vingst, Höhenberg, Ostheim and Neubrück. The constituencies are tailored so that they have approximately the same population.

According to the state returning officer, 13.2 million eligible voters are called upon to vote in the 2022 state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. All adult Germans who have had their main residence in North Rhine-Westphalia for at least 16 days can vote. The state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia take place every five years. These were the 2017 election results for second votes in Cologne 6 constituency:

  • SPD: 28.6 percent
  • CDU: 22.3 percent
  • Greens: 13.4 percent
  • FDP: 12.3 percent
  • Left: 10.8 percent
  • AfD: 6.1 percent
  • Pirates: 1.1 percent
  • Other: 5.3 percent

In the 2017 state election, 92,371 citizens were eligible to vote. Voter turnout was 60.0 percent.

In addition to the directly elected MP Susana Dos Santos Herrmann (SPD – 32.1 percent of the first votes), who succeeded Stephan Gatter of many years (who no longer stood for office), the Green Party candidate Berivan Aymaz was elected via her party’s state list (139th place Previous CDU member of the state parliament Serap Güler, who had been a candidate in the Cologne 7 state constituency five years earlier, missed her return to the state parliament despite her good state list place (6) – it was not enough, but she became state secretary in Prime Minister Laschet’s cabinet.
