The president of Egypt, Abdelfatah al Sisi, one of the key mediators between Israel y Hamassaid this Wednesday that he hopes that the parties will reach “in a few days” an agreement for a truce in the Gaza Strip.

“In these next few days, God willing, we will reach a ceasefire, and let real help begin (…) for the (Gaza) strip in all areas”said the Egyptian president at a ceremony dedicated to people with special needs in Cairo.

This is the first direct statement by the Egyptian president with reference to the negotiations that representatives of Israel and Hamas are holding indirectly in Doha with the help of Egypt, Qatar and the United States to reach a truce agreement, the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and increased aid to civilians in Gaza.

Khan Younis (—), 31/12/2023.- Palestinians search for bodies and survivors in the rubble of a destroyed family house following an Israeli air strike during an Israeli operation in Khan Younis refugee camp, in the southern Gaza Strip 31 December 2023. More than 21,600 Palestinians and at least 1,300 Israelis have been killed, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), since Hamas militants launched an attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip on 07 October, and the Israeli operations in Gaza and the West Bank which followed it. Although he did not disclose details about the progress of the talks, Al Sisi said that Cairo “will continue to help,” and that he “hopes that the crisis” caused by the Gaza war “will have a quick end.”

“We continue and will continue to support and help until (the creation) of a Palestinian State on the (occupied) territories of 1967, with its capital in East Jerusalem”he emphasized.

The spokesman for the Qatari Foreign Ministry, Majed al-Ansarisaid on Tuesday that negotiations for a truce in Gaza continue in Doha, although “there is nothing concrete to announce” and “there is no evolution.”

However, optimism was reflected in Al Ansari’s words when he indicated that he hopes that “today or tomorrow there will be something” that can be announced and that “an agreement will be reached.”

Since the war began, Israel and Hamas only reached a one-week truce agreement in late November, which allowed the release of 105 hostages in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.

On October 7, Israel suffered the worst attack in its history perpetrated by Hamas that caused the death of some 1,200 people and led to the current war that has left almost 30,000 dead, most of them women and children, in Gaza. EFE (I)
