Sindelfingen (dpa / lsw) – The only candidate for the chairmanship of the Education and Science Union (GEW), Monika Stein, wants to work for more fairness in education. She will do all she can to ensure that children and young people, regardless of their parents or money, have the best educational opportunities for them, said Stein, who comes from Freiburg, on Friday in her application speech at the digital state delegates’ assembly in Sindelfingen.
The 50-year-old Stein teaches at a secondary and technical secondary school in Freiburg and is chair of the left-wing voter association “A city for everyone. Left. Ecological. Feminist”, which is the second largest parliamentary group in the Freiburg municipal council. She announced that she would give up both posts if she was elected GEW chairman. The previous GEW state chairman Doro Moritz is leaving after twelve years at the head of the education union and is retiring.
Due to the corona, the elections take place by postal vote. The election period ends on November 10th (5 p.m.). The announcement of the results is scheduled for November 12th. The GEW is the largest educational interest group in Baden-Württemberg. The education union currently has 50,000 members in the Southwest.
