AstraZeneca compromises with European Union: 200 million d…

The European Commission and AstraZeneca have ended their months-long legal dispute. The British-Swedish pharmaceutical company will deliver 200 million doses of its corona vaccine by the end of March 2022. The Commission announced this on Friday morning.

The agreement foresees that AstzaZeneca will deliver 135 million doses to EU member states by the end of this year, of which 60 million will be delivered by the end of the third quarter of 2021. An additional 65 million doses will be delivered by the end of March 2022. This is to complete the 100 million doses that the 27 Member States had received on June 30, the European Commission said in a communication.

The Commission notes that in August 2020 it signed a contract with AstraZeneca for 300 million doses, but those deliveries were soon delayed. This agreement also immediately puts an end to the legal proceedings initiated by the EU because of the delayed deliveries.

Remarkable: due to the advanced state of the European vaccination campaign, those 200 million doses will immediately be donated to developing countries as part of the Covax programme. This is reported by German media.
