It is the night of the last duel between rivals Donald Trump and Joe Biden, in which the USA at the turn of the millennium is resurrected at the Zurich Pfauen – with the stage adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel “My year of rest and relaxation”, staged by the American – Latvian director Yana Ross. America 2020 is glowing; America iced over in 2000.
The American outfitter Zane Pihlstrom lets ice flowers grow on the walls, and the industrial chic of the loft made of concrete and metal, of course with a monster fridge, is one thing above all else: cold. Pihlstrom’s costumes have nothing cozy either. Here glitter, there fatsuits, there plastic dresses with “Vogue” cover prints; also killer heels that are not intended for movement. The product world of the late 90s is one big, functionless trompe-l’lil.
