Dutchman dies one week after crash at Dakar Rally

Dutch motorcyclist Edwin Straver died a week after his serious crash at the Dakar Rally. As the Dutch media reported on Friday, the 48-year-old succumbed to the injuries he sustained in his accident. This year’s Dakar, held in Saudi Arabia, claimed a second human life after the Portuguese Paulo Goncalves.

Straver had rushed to Haradh on the eleventh stage on January 16 and had been without a heartbeat for about ten minutes. Doctors had revived the Dutchman driving a private KTM. He reportedly broke a cervical vertebra in his accident and was flown to his home in a coma this week.

Goncalves had died on the seventh stage after a fall. The 40-year-old’s death at the premiere of the event in Saudi Arabia was the first of a driver at the Dakar Rally in five years.
