Dutch sailors welcomed like pop stars in New York | Inland

Dutch sailors did not know what happened to them when they visited Times Square in New York. They were brought in as heroes after working in the Caribbean for three months.

The police in New York had already tipped them off: if you want to experience something special, put on your tropical whites and visit the most famous square in the world.

The 93 Dutch crew members knew this. Because, veterans are praised in America. “There was no getting through,” says sailor Dennie, who was in New York for the first time in his life. “They all wanted to know where we came from and what we came to do.”

Pet in the air

The sailors wanted to take a group photo in the heart of New York, but that turned out to be quite a problem. Bystanders kept taking selfies. Still, the navy photographer has managed to get the sailors on the plate with their caps in the air. “A very nice memory,” says Dennie.

The crew of the Holland can still enjoy the city until the end of the week. And even if they are not in tropical white, that is quite an experience. For example, Dennie did not have to wait in line at a restaurant with his comrades when they learned that they were from the navy. “And when we wanted to pay, we only paid half. The drinks were on the house. ”

A tribute that the sailors in the Netherlands will not receive so quickly, not even on National Veterans Day.
