Düsseldorf is fighting its way into the second round in Ingolstadt

Ingolstadt
Second division Fortuna Düsseldorf beat Ingolstadt 1-0. Fourth division Ulm manages a small cup sensation against Erzgebirge Aue.

Bundesliga relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf has fought its way into the second round of the DFB Cup. The team of coach Uwe Rösler prevailed against third division club FC Ingolstadt with 1-0 (0-0). Substitute Thomas Pledl scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute.

A week before the start of the second division against newly promoted Würzburger Kickers, the Rhinelander had a lot of trouble with the Schanzers – despite at times 80 percent possession against low-ranking hosts in front of empty ranks.

Düsseldorf misses a lot of opportunities

However, Fortuna did not use their few good opportunities at first, with goal scorer Rouwen Hennings failing twice from a promising position (49th, 54th). Ten minutes before the end of regular time, Jakub Piotrowski put Pledl in the limelight and brought the favorite into the round of the best 32 teams.

Ulm again cup fright

Second division soccer club Erzgebirge Aue failed at its opening hurdle in the DFB Cup. The Saxons were defeated in the first round by the regional division SSV Ulm with 0: 2 (0: 1). The Ulm team had already taken care of the early retirement of the defending champion Eintracht Frankfurt in 2018. Tobias Rühle (37th) and Felix Higl (89th) scored the decisive goals in front of 140 spectators in the Danube Stadium at home.

The Württemberg state cup winner started the game at high speed and kept putting Aue under pressure. The second division in turn acted too harmlessly in the opposing penalty area. After Rühle’s opening goal, Ulm initially continued to fight, a supposed goal by Higl (72nd) did not count due to offside. Ulm left only a few chances for coach Dirk Schuster’s team, who will be a guest at the new Würzburger Kickers on Saturday for the league opener.

Union wins with difficulty and only in extra time

1. FC Union Berlin only reached the second round of the DFB Cup with a lot of effort and only after a 30-minute extra shift. The Bundesliga team won 1-0 (0-0, 0-0) after extra time at the second division club Karlsruher SC. The decisive goal was achieved by new signing Nico Schlotterbeck with a direct acceptance in the 118th minute. According to the current Corona regulation in Baden-Württemberg, the game was played in front of 450 spectators – including the former Karlsruhe and today’s U21 national coach von Schlotterbeck, Stefan Kuntz.
