The trip to the north was worth it for the Düsseldorf team – they went home with an away win

The players of the ART Giants in Hamburg use Sunday afternoon (January 24th) to illustrate their ambitions for the playoffs. On the 15th matchday of the BARMER 2. Basketball Bundesliga ProB, the Düsseldorf team went to Hamburg, where they defeated ETV Hamburg with 87:80.

The Hohe Weide sports hall provided the backdrop for the ETV Hamburg game against the ART Giants on Sunday. Right at the beginning the guests showed through Shawn Gulley, who scored a threesome after a few seconds that they had big plans for the game in the north. The ART Giants were wide awake from the start and took a double-digit lead (4:14) with their fast offensive game. Hamburg seemed overwhelmed with the giants’ cleared offensive and found no antidotes. ETV trainer Sükran Gencay took two time outs in the first quarter, but they couldn’t prevent Andrius Mikutis (26 points) and Shawn Gulley (24 points) goals. Düsseldorf extended the lead to 16:32.

The giants expanded their leadership in the second quarter with quick fast breaks. A 5-0 run right at the beginning and successful throws from far outside by Finn Pook contributed to the success. Coach Kevin Magdowski rotated a lot and the entire team signaled the will to win. In the first half everything went well and so the guests went into the dressing room with a comfortable 49:31 lead.

After changing sides, the giants did not give up. Dennis Mavin, Quadre Lollis Jr., Andius Mikutis and Shawn Gulley extended the lead to 26 points (34:60). Hamburg continued to fight for every point, but did not find the right remedy against the strong opponent. At the end of the third quarter, the table showed a clear lead for Düsseldorfer (49:70).

But Hamburg did not give up and in the final quarter showed a willingness to fight. More resolutely on the defensive, they tackled simple points. Magdowski tried to stop the home side’s run at 58:72 with a break. Then he relied on his experienced team around Mavin, Mikutis and Gulley. Because in addition to captain Sebastian Kehr, Marian Schick and Linus Helmhold had to pass due to injury. Despite his physical inferiority, the American Lollis Jr. always managed to assert himself and secured important points for his team (69:84). Even if the newcomer from Hamburg surpassed himself again in the last few meters, the Düsseldorf team was able to celebrate a thrilling and well-deserved away win (80:87).

“We got off the bus hotly with the aim of starting out with a lot of intensity after a long journey. We then implemented that fantastically and put a lot of power on the floor in the first half. But Hamburg never gave up and in the end put everything on one card. Nevertheless, it was a good away game overall and therefore a deserved win for us, ”Head Coach Kevin Magdowski.

Next Saturday (January 30th, 7:30 p.m.) the giants will be playing away with the Itzehoe Eagles. At home on February 6th at 7 p.m. the game is against the WWU Baskets Muenster.
