Driver hits and kills cyclist in Chelsea – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – Authorities have arrested a driver for allegedly fatally hitting a cyclist early Sunday morning in Manhattan, New York City police said.

Edgar Maeda-Luca, 24, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that ended in death, police said Sunday night. The victim, identified as Carlos García-Ramos, 38, was pronounced dead in hospital.

According to the police report, the accident happened around 1:22 am. when authorities responded to a call about an unconscious man in front of 241 West 24th Street in Chelsea. Upon arrival, they found the victim with head and body trauma.

Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital. New York Health + Hospitals/Bellevue where he was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation determined that the cyclist was on his electric bicycle and travelling West Street 24 when an Infiniti Q50 sedan, also traveling east on the Via West 24, it struck him from behind, causing the man to fall off his bicycle and hit an unoccupied parked vehicle, eventually falling to the ground.

The vehicle operator reportedly fled the scene, but the vehicle was parked and unoccupied West Street 24 yes Avenue 7. The driver was immediately identified and arrested shortly thereafter. The NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Team is investigating.
