Driver arrested for causing accident that claimed the life of a woman and injured eight people on Long Island – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – Authorities arrested a Long Island driver Sunday after an accident that claimed the life of a 57-year-old woman on Saturday night, authorities said.

Suffolk County Police said 27-year-old Christian Lopez was allegedly driving under the influence of drugs in Brentwood when he crashed over Second Avenue, at about 9:40 pm, and generated a chain accident.

López would have crashed into a Toyota Camry that ended up hitting a Jeep Wrangler, according to authorities.

A 57-year-old Brentwood woman riding in the front of the Toyota, Soraida Polanco, was transported to a Bay Shore hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her husband, Rodolfo, 59, who was driving the car, was seriously injured when he was rushed to a hospital. Another passenger, Blanca Flor Moran Acosta, 35, who was riding in the back of the car, was also injured.

Five passengers traveling in the Jeep were taken to nearby hospitals with various injuries. They are Blanca García, 71, Claro Muñoz, 69, Meyvellin Muñoz, 39, and their two children, Johann, 10, and Xavier, 14. All are expected to survive.

López himself was injured in the accident. Police said he was treated at South Shore University Hospital before being taken to Barracks Tercero.

Contact information for his attorney was not immediately known.

Detectives ask anyone with information about the accident to call the Major Cases Unit at 631-852-6553.
