U18 election: This is how the children in Düsseldorf would vote

Düsseldorf.
The youth council starts the U18 federal election for children and young people in Düsseldorf. Greens would get the most second votes.

In an action week from September 12th to 17th, young people were able to vote for the symbolic U18 election. Children and young people from Düsseldorf also took part in the U18 election, which is coordinated on site by the Düsseldorf Youth Ring.

The general election is just around the corner, but not everyone is allowed to participate. Children and young people under the age of 18 are not eligible to vote in federal elections in Germany. The U18 elections, which take place across Germany nine days before the general election, show that they are nevertheless politically interested, express their opinions and bring their own issues into the political discourse. “The U18 election offers the opportunity to hear the voices of young people louder and to be more aware of their interests. Because especially during the pandemic it has become clear that children and young people with their interests and needs are often not sufficiently taken into account by decision-makers, “explains Verena Hohn, youth education officer in the youth ring.

750 young people cast their votes in Düsseldorf

In the run-up to the election, materials and methods of political education were sent to all Düsseldorf polling stations in order to also support the content of the election. For young people, voting should not remain symbolic, which is why the youth ring is calling for the voting age to be reduced to 16, emphasizes Verena Hohn. In total, more than 245,000 young people across Germany cast their votes – over 750 of them in the 15 Düsseldorf U18 polling stations.

And so the under 18-year-olds voted in Düsseldorf: In the second vote, the Greens are the strongest with 23.6 percent, closely followed by the SPD (22.0 percent). The CDU voted 15.3 percent, 13.9 percent voted for the FDP and 7.52 percent for the Left. Smaller parties are also popular with the U18s. A total of 17.7 percent opted for smaller parties such as the Animal Welfare Party, The Party, the AfD, Volt or Team Todenhöfer.

The direct mandate of the first votes was won by Zanda Martens from the SPD in constituency 106 Düsseldorf I. In constituency 107 Düsseldorf II, the under 18-year-olds prefer to be represented by Sara Nanni (Greens).
