Yet with proper treatment, women with breast cancer can still be cured.

Surgical Oncology Specialist at Brawijaya Hospital Antasari dr Arief Wibisono, Sp.B(K) Onk, in special coverage GridHEALTH, Saturday (12/11/2021), explained the percentage of a woman who had breast cancer might recover.

“Breast cancer can be cured or not? The answer is yes. In stage one or early stages, survival or the survival rate of a woman in five years, can reach 99%,” he said.

If breast cancer is detected at a later stage, namely stage 2 or stage 3, the survival rate may decrease.

“Stage 2 and stage 3, maybe 90-80% going down. But it’s different in each country,” said doctor Arief.

As for stage 4 breast cancer, survival rate less than 40 percent or about 30-20%.

There are four treatments given by women with breast cancer, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy.

“Treatment breast cancer each individual is different, adapted to the type of cell, the nature of the tumor, hormones, and stage. It cannot be beaten equally (treatment) for each patient, maybe the treatment is different,” he explained.

Doctor Arief explained, the purpose of treatment breast cancer not only to make women heal and live long, but also to have a better life.

“The goal of cancer treatment (is) quality of life or a good quality of life. Even though the female patient with stage 4 cancer has a cough, she can still do her activities with good treatment or fractures and is then treated, she can still carry on with her normal activities,” he concluded.
