Donostia Kirola defends that it offers “a safe environment” to do sports in the face of the decrease in subscribers

The Municipal Sports Board of San Sebastián, Donostia Sport, has defended that it offers “a safe environment for sports practice” against the decrease in subscribers of the Kirol Txartela card by 6.4% as of December 31, 2020, compared to last year, reaching 46,241 subscribers.

At a press conference, the mayor of Sports, Martín Ibabe, pointed out that 2020 has meant «an eextra effort when managing municipal sports facilities, that the city has safe environments for sports ». In addition, he highlighted that San Sebastián has been “one of the first towns in the Basque Country to reopen the facilities and be able to offer all its campaigns of activities adapted to the circumstances” of the covid-19 pandemic.

“Donostia Kirola has been adapting in an agile and efficient way to the new measures established in the successive decrees in order to continue offering all its services and making the sports facilities a safe place for sports”, the Board of Trustees highlighted.

Despite this, Ibabe has indicated that, due to the pandemic, “the upward trend” of subscribers to the Kirol Txartela of recent years, decreasing by 6.4% as of December 31, 2020, reaching 46,241 subscribers. “Of these, 46.5% are women, one point more than the previous year”, point out those responsible for Donostia Kirola who point out that there has also been an increase in the number of subscribers over 65 years of age, who are already the 9.7% of the total in 2019 represented 9%.

The number of people who have participated in any of the activities of the three campaigns organized by Donostia Kirola has also decreased (12%), although it must be taken into account that the pandemic has caused the groups to have had to be smaller . Even so, almost 30,000 people (29,677) have participated in some of the organized activities.

Regarding the use of the municipal facilities refers, use has fallen by half, motivated in large part by the closure of the facilities during confinement, as well as the failure to carry out training and school and federated competitions. Thus, from the 3.1 million accesses in 2019, it has risen to 1.5 in 2020.

The Paco Yoldi sports center continues to be the most used municipal facility with around 250,000 uses. The sports centers of Benta Berri (187,000), Zuhaizti (135,000), Bidebieta (134,000), Intxaurrondo (133,000) and Etxadi (130,000).

On the other hand, he explained that the suspension of practically all popular tests and sporting events has caused the amount of subsidies granted by Donostia Kirola “to have decreased by 18% in 2020”. However, over the past year 11 sporting events have been held, such as the Cross de la Gimnástica de Ulia, the International Swimming Tournament, the La Concha regattas or the Final of the Women’s Soccer Champions League.

The number of both male and female teams in the highest categories of their respective modalities has been maintained, again highlighting the number of female teams (9). Donostia Kirola has once again awarded the Urrezko Kirol Txartela to 21 individual athletes and four teams who have obtained important achievements for the sport of the city in the different state and international competitions in which they have participated.

Donostia Kirola has closed 2020 with an execution of the budget of expenses of 70.77%, derived mainly from the closure of the facilities during the months of confinement. For its part, the percentage of execution of the revenue budget has been closed at 74.35%, caused mostly by the return of the amounts corresponding to the months of closure of the facilities and suspension of courses. In total, Donostia Kirola has returned 863,999 euros to users.

In this way, Donostia Kirola’s self-financing percentage has dropped only two points compared to 2019, standing at 52.48%.
