LIEROP – With a hard kick in the abdominal cavity, the neighbor of Jan and José Bartels in Lierop ended the life of their dog Neeltje last Sunday. Police arrested the man but have since dropped the case due to lack of evidence. Incomprehensible to the couple: “He just killed our child.”

Defeated, angry and emotional, Jan (74) and José (68) Bartels are sitting in their garden at ‘t Alfort in Lierop. Next to them are four empty dog baskets (1 for outside, 1 for the bedroom, 1 for the living room and 1 for the sitter) and a bag of kibble. Is no longer necessary. Their dog Neeltje is buried further in the garden. Victim of brutal violence.

Their story begins early Sunday evening. He is sitting outside while she is mowing the grass. Their fourteen-year-old ‘child’ Neeltje is playing in the garden when suddenly the neighbor comes running outside with a lot of fanfare. The four-legged friend is startled and starts barking. ‘If he comes to me on the grass, I’ll kick him to pieces’, the Bartelsen add threateningly.
