Documentary about Nicky Verstappen may be broadcast

The first part of the documentary ‘De Zaak Nicky Verstappen: Behind The Scenes At The Police Investigation’ has since been broadcast on RTL 4 and the second part will be broadcast on Monday evening at 8.30 pm.

‘Not yet officially convicted’

Jos B. was last week sentenced to 12.5 years in prison. According to the court in Maastricht, it has been proven that B. kidnapped and abused 11-year-old Nicky Verstappen in 1998. After the conviction, RTL and presenter Ewout Genemans announced that the documentary they have been working on for years will be broadcast this weekend and Monday.

But B. wanted to prevent this broadcast with summary proceedings. The reason? There will be an appeal and Jos B. is still a suspect. “Jos B. has not yet been officially convicted,” said Adi van Koningsveld, B.’s lawyer.

According to her, broadcasting the documentary would violate the presumption of innocence – ‘You are innocent until proven otherwise’. She thinks that Jos B. is presented as a perpetrator and not as a suspect, she said in court.

But in turn, the lawyer of RTL and Genemans announced in court that agreements have been made in advance to work carefully. For example, the first episode and half of the second episode would really only be about the police investigation. Only in the other half of the second episode, Jos B. would appear unrecognizable. The judge agrees with this.

Privacy guaranteed

According to her, B.’s privacy is sufficiently guaranteed. For example, he is not recognizable in the picture, it is clearly stated that he is a suspect and at the end it is announced that there will be an appeal. That is why the judge decided that the documentary may be broadcast.

Documentary maker No Pictures Please, from presenter Ewout Genemans (35) and RTL, spent three years with the detective team in the Nicky Verstappen case. Even before a suspect was on the screen and a large-scale DNA relationship study was started, the documentary was already in the making.

OM and Police are behind it

According to the lawyer of RTL and Genemans, the police and the Public Prosecution Service are ‘fully behind’ that the documentary is broadcast. “Only if they agreed could it continue.”
