Doctors: Who, if not the Minister of Health, should go to the critical points?

Prof. Asen Baltov

The Red Opposition in Varna issued a declaration setting a dilemma for the Minister of Health, Prof. Kostadin Angelov, to be either a candidate or a minister.

We asked reputable doctors for their opinion on the subject.

Prof. Asen Baltov, Head of Pirogov:

There is no way for the minister to stop going to the critical points in a situation of crisis

The minister is a responsible person and that is why he gave up his election campaign. There are so many tasks that in the current situation with the epidemic must be solved every day that this is normal.

Deputy ministers cannot take over his work in a crisis situation. There is no way to stop walking to the critical points, to see what the problems are due to, whether there are enough protective equipment.

Just as I, as the director of the hospital, take care of it and want to know everything that is happening inside it, so the Minister of Health needs to know what is happening and where.

Dr. Ivan Madjarov, head of the BMA:

I have never heard of him having political messages

It is important for us to have a well-functioning and organized minister, such as Minister Angelov. Elections come and go, but people’s health is paramount. It is more important to have an organization to deal with the crisis, which I think is good at the moment – both in terms of logistics with vaccines and measures.

As a medical union and as my personal opinion – we are too far from political passions. It is inexplicable to us that anyone would want to behead the Ministry of Health in a situation where we are at the foot of it, we are not even at the end or the top of another wave of coronavirus.

If there are no legal contradictions, it is everyone’s personal decision whether to be an MP or not, and no one can influence him. What should guide us is the health of the nation and the law. If he doesn’t forbid, what’s the problem?

However, the Minister should definitely not have political messages and so far I have not heard of any other than health messages.
