In many cities, the demand for wedding appointments was and is hardly slowed down, as a survey by the German Press Agency among municipalities showed. However, due to the hygiene requirements, the trend is towards civil marriage in a small group. The wedding industry is still lagging behind.
“We see the 2020 season as very difficult and hope that perhaps a little more freedom will be possible again at the end of the summer season,” said Svenja Schirk, spokeswoman for the Federation of German Wedding Planners. Many newlyweds were still worried about their wedding and the associated celebration. “Especially at the celebrations, the current regulations are not particularly attractive for newlyweds and do not want to be complied with.” This includes hygiene rules such as minimum distance and a limited size of the wedding parties. In Frankfurt, for example, ten participants including the wedding couple are now permitted to attend the civil wedding, in Fulda six guests plus a photographer.
But while the wedding planners are hoping for business to resume, the bridal couple apparently won’t let the joy spoil. “Traditionally and due to the weather, most marriages take place in May, June, July, August and until the middle of September. Nothing has changed in this otherwise unusual year,” said a spokeswoman for the city of GIESSEN. 63 couples have been married there since mid-March – almost as many as in the same period last year.
“The behavior of the couple on date reservations shows no change,” said the city of WIESBADEN. The demand for marriage dates is “unchanged high”. The popular marriage months from May to the end of August are fully utilized in the state capital. The registry office registered 109 marriages since mid-March.

The demand for marriage dates is also strong in KASSEL. The wedding calendar has therefore been released for bookings, the city said. 116 marriages have taken place in Kassel since mid-March, but this was a decrease compared to the previous year with 174 marriages.
“The registry office FRANKFURT held marriages all the time, but in a specially furnished room and only with the bride and groom,” said Frankfurt registry office manager Andrea Hart. With regard to the number of canceled or postponed marriage dates, no binding figures can be provided, but the majority of the couples have decided to be married despite the restrictions. Other couples would have made an appointment later or canceled the wedding entirely. Interest in wedding appointments has dropped: “In April 2020, the registry office received about a third fewer requests for initial advice than in April 2019.”
When deciding whether to marry or not, however, the couples are on their own. None of the registry offices make a recommendation. “Due to the unpredictable development of the corona pandemic and the associated protective measures, a forecast regarding future marriages is currently not possible,” said the registry office in Frankfurt.
