Discount Christmas: ALDI Süd’s Budget-Friendly Christmas Market in Cologne

It smells like the discounter. This Christmas market is not only contemplative, but also damn cheap!

ALDI Süd opened a three-day Christmas market in front of its store doors in Cologne (NRW) on Tuesday. Shortly after opening, the supermarket parking lot was packed. Visitors here only pay one euro for mulled wine, non-alcoholic alternatives and roasted almonds, and two euros for Christmas sausage or crepes.

▶︎ For comparison: a bratwurst roll or a cup of mulled wine cost an impressive five euros in Berlin last year!

But does the cheap version with delicacies only taste good from discount stores’ own brands?

BILD was there at the opening and wanted to know whether the Christmas market in the supermarket parking lot could keep up.

The trio of women Barbara (80), Petra (56) and Marianne (71) were all of the same opinion: “It tastes even better than anywhere else! We also like to go to Christmas markets and then get a mulled wine that costs six euros. We had several drinks here.” Because here you don’t have to turn over the euro twice.

“That’s great because things have recently become more expensive everywhere, including here in the store,” they say.

“We can’t afford this otherwise”

Laura (21) and Linus (22) also feel this: “Inflation has hit us hard. We’ve gotten used to it, but there’s less left at the end of the month. That’s why we’re enjoying the fact that it’s cheaper here.”

They taste no different to the bratwurst at other Christmas markets. And then the couple buys children’s punch, crepes and roasted almonds. “The full program! We can’t afford that otherwise.”

Proceeds go to the youth center

3-year-old Ella also liked being rewarded with a trip to the Christmas market after the pediatrician. Mama Susan (35) told BILD: “We are looking forward to Christmas, but we have noticed the inflation. We have a lot less left as a family than before. We’ll make sure we don’t buy everything and share the crepe.”

What made many people happy: The proceeds from the cheap Christmas market, which runs until November 16th (3 p.m. to 9 p.m., ALDI Süd, Grüner Weg 2), go to the Cologne Youth Center.

The carousel and photo box are also free. A company spokeswoman: “Christmas is one of the most beautiful times of the year, but often also one of the most expensive. We want everyone to be able to afford a cheap Christmas.”

This year the cheapest Christmas market will only take place in Cologne. Whether the action will be repeated is still uncertain.
