DIALOGO – CES calls parties to a meeting this afternoon to overcome the electoral crisis

Santo Domingo, RD.

The Economic and Social Council convened a meeting of the Dominican political parties for this afternoon, at 3:00, at the headquarters of the Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Teacher.

The call was confirmed by the Dominican Liberation Party, which immediately said it would attend the CES call, directed by Monsignor Agripino Núñez Collado.

Last night the former president of the Republic, Leonel Fernández, president of the Fuerza del Pueblo party, dismissed the CES as an institution with constitutionality to convene an electoral political dialogue and said he would not attend.

The objective of the meeting is to reach a pact with which the current electoral crisis is overcome, which came as a result of the suspension of the municipal general elections.

On February 26, the Economic and Social Council issued a statement expressing its commitment to contribute to the necessary conclusion of a political pact that contributes to restoring the confidence necessary for the celebration of a free, transparent and democratic electoral process in the municipal, congress and presidential scope.

“The employer, worker and social sectors represented in the Economic and Social Council reiterate their vocation to dialogue and social agreement for the preservation of peace and the consolidation of democracy,” said the statement quoted.

The former president Leonel Fernández warned last night that the government, being a major player in that situation, lacks legitimacy to lead a dialogue whose purpose is precisely to overcome the crisis of trust and anger that exists with respect to the government itself and the authorities of the Central Electoral Board (JCE).

Fernández said, in a speech to the nation, that being an organ of government, the Economic and Social Council is politically disqualified to serve as an organizer of the dialogue, so the consultations that were held between political actors culminated last Saturday without an agreement of who should direct the work.

“The government should not insist on playing a mediating role, through its institutions, in the dialogue so desired by the Dominican people at the moment. He must simply limit himself to assuming his role as a party to the process, like everyone else; and instead of generating obstacles and delays for its realization, to contribute, on the contrary, in a frank and sincere way to its successful culmination for the benefit of the entire Dominican people, ”said the former president.
