Deputies hold virtual conference for the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On the occasion of this Thursday commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Chamber of Deputies organized a virtual conference with the Vice President of Costa Rica, Epsy Campbell, on the effectiveness of human rights and public freedoms in the region.

Alfredo Pacheco, president of the Lower House, pointed out that the event serves to draw attention to the fact that in the country there is a Constitution that protects people, but inequality persists. “Now that we are living in a time of pandemic, it is time to end inequality, because undoubtedly, at this stage, in this period of time that the world is living, inequality has grown, it has been accentuated and much more has been perceived ”, He expressed.

He added that “in the Dominican Republic, we have a Constitution that privileges fundamental rights, it is time for the Dominican nation to make them its own.”

For his part, the deputy Juna Dionisio Rodríguez Restituyo, president of the permanent commission on Human Rights, said that it is the work of the congressmen that their life and their work as representatives is framed in the strictest respect for human rights.

The vice president of Costa Rica regretted that millions of people in the region, and now more in times of a pandemic, have not resolved their fundamental rights, including health, education, drinking water and decent housing.

Cámpel criticized inequality, specifically in Latin America and said that what it achieves is that there is insufficient public policy, which constitutes a violation of human rights.

However, he urged those present to have the hope of achieving equality, that there is no discrimination.

The welcoming remarks were delivered by Deputy Adelis Olivares, member of the Permanent Commission on Human Rights. Other members, diplomats and personalities of civil society participated.

The meeting, held at the Fray Antón de Montesinos Monument, at the initiative of the Permanent Human Rights Commission, chaired by deputy Juan Dionisio Rodríguez Restituyo, was led by the president of the Lower House, Alfredo Pacheco.
