Roy B., who is suspected of having left the lost Orlando Boldewijn to his fate in 2018, says he has little to remember in the court of The Hague on Monday. He is said to have made previous statements to the police that he saw the boy lying in the water.
The then seventeen-year-old boy disappeared on the night of February 18 to 19, 2018 and his body was found on February 26 in the Hague, the Blue Carpet. B. is suspected of mistreatment resulting in death or death through guilt.
B. and Boldewijn had agreed via the dating app Grindr at the time and spent the evening on the fishing island of the suspect in the Blue Carpet. Around midnight the suspect dropped the boy off at the quay with his boat.
According to B. Boldewijn would go back to his hometown of Rotterdam, but camera images show that the boy kept wandering around. He sent a message to the suspect where he was and when he met a man later that night, he said he had been suddenly dropped and was looking for Roy.
The question remains what exactly happened
The question is what exactly happened around 1.06 a.m. that night. The sharp drop in battery temperature on the Orlando phone shows that it would have ended up in the water around that time. How is unclear.
B. made several statements to the police that he saw Boldewijn lying in the water, but that he panicked and did nothing. In court he now says that he went to tell what the police wanted to hear. He was panicked that night, but he doesn’t remember exactly why.
Confronted with statements from those he allegedly said to have seen Boldewijn, B. says the witnesses are lying. He could not explain why he never called the police after Boldewijn went missing.
No mud under and in victim’s shoes
Forensic investigations have shown that Boldewijn did not enter the water from the shore. No mud has been found under and in his shoes.
Boldewijn’s body was found close to the suspect’s island. The water was 1 degree at the time and the question is whether Boldewijn was able to swim at that temperature for more than 50 meters, the distance to the side.
The sentence will be pronounced against the man on Thursday.
