A deer fled into the city of Compiègne, 80 kilometers northeast of Paris, on Saturday in an attempt to save his life. The animal, chased by hunters on horses and dogs, sank exhausted by its hooves in front of a company entrance.

Animal activists hurriedly rounded up residents and supporters to ensure that the animal would not fall prey to the hobby torturers. A veterinarian who came to the rescue anaesthetized the animal after which it could be transferred to the forests and released there. A video of the hunter fighters shows how the activists chase the hunting dogs away from the animal in agony.

Animal activists and supporters have long tried to enforce a ban on these cruel hunting practices. Three years ago, a wounded deer fled in the same area into a private garden to escape from hunters.
