When Dayot Upamecano chose to leave Valenciennes to join Austria and RB Salzburg in 2015, few imagined that the result would be as brilliant for the native of Evreux. As is customary for the best elements in the Red Bull group, he then joined RB Leipzig in 2017, and is now one of the club’s major players in the running for the Bundesliga title. But inevitably, he caught the eye of more upscale clubs all over Europe.
This winter, Arsenal had come to the news several times. And according to information from Bild, the Gunners will be back on track this summer. But the German newspaper focuses mainly on the contractual situation of the Frenchman, whose contract expires in 2021. The latter has so far refused all approaches from his leaders for a contract extension. This summer, its regressive release clause will fall to 60 million euros, a substantial amount but which should not scare the biggest European teams.
The player dreams of the English championship
As you can see, Leipzig is not in a strong position on this file, and if no agreement is reached by June, a departure from Upamecano should be the next logical step. The leaders of the German team will however try all for all to retain their defender who has 24 games in all competitions this season, they who are already at risk of losing their star striker Timo Werner. They believe that the defender still has significant room for improvement which he can exploit to the best of his ability under the orders of Julian Nagelsmann.
The Habs will not be short of contenders, however, since in addition to Arsenal, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich would also be on the spot. The Catalans have only three central defenders at their disposal, including a fairly average Samuel Umtiti, while the Bavarians will lose people behind, with the upcoming departure of Jerome Boateng.
