According to figures from the Committee of French Automobile Manufacturers (CCFA), the French automobile market experienced a 1.88% increase in the registrations of new passenger cars in 2019. Data provided to the regional daily press by AAA DATA, l expert in data, to see the market trends by department, and compare them with those of 2010.

Between 2010 and 2019, car sales to individuals were down in all departments. The market is maintained by professionals:

Aging buyers

Another significant trend over the period 2010-2019, the average age of buyers is increasing. Between 52 and 54 in 2010, it varies according to the departments from 54 to 59 in 2020:

Dacia Sandero still in the lead

As in 2018, the Dacia Sandero is at the top of the ranking of the models most purchased by individuals. Reliable and inexpensive, it leads the way in sales in almost all western departments. Only Ille-et-Vilaine, where the PSA Janaie plant is located near Rennes, prefers the Citroën C3.

Behind the Dacia Sandero, second place varies by department. The match is played between the Renault Clio, the Peugeot 208, the Citroën C3 and the Toyota Yaris.

Diesel down

Comparison of AAA Data data between 2010 and 2019 on energy choices shows the switch that took place between diesel and petrol on purchases of new vehicles.

Criticized for its impact on the environment, and especially less and less competitive at the pump, diesel is losing much speed among individuals:

Electric appeared during the period, both for individuals and professionals.

New funding methods

Since 2010, we no longer buy a car the same way. In all departments, conventional credit and personal financing have fallen by half since 2010, in favor of long-term rental and rental with option to buy, which increased by between 70 and 80% depending on the department.

In Calvados, in 2019, 7,630 cars were financed by personal financing / conventional credit, 2,063 by long-term rental, and 2,476 by rental with option to buy.

Long-term rental is also on the rise among companies.

And the color?

In the world, white is the preferred color of motorists for their car. In France, gray has dominated for a long time but has seen its share decrease, in favor of white… Black too is doing well. Anticipating the ease of resale, we hesitate to risk flashy colors.

Here is the breakdown of the colors of cars bought by individuals in 2019 by department:

In all the departments, black, white and gray added together represent more than three-quarters of the cars purchased. Far from the colors of this parking lot in Nantes in 1975…

The French car market started 2020 with a sharp drop of 13.44% in January. A decline that was expected after the entry into force of a new European environmental constraint and the increase in the penalty on January 1.
