Data traffic in January was higher than that registered before the emergency by covid-19 | News

The data traffic of the last week of January 2021 showed a growth of up to 76.83% in fixed networks and 39.28% in mobile networks, compared to what was registered in the week before the start of the first period of mandatory social isolation in March of 2020, revealed statistics analyzed by the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel).

These records indicated that in the “new normal” operating companies face traffic substantially higher than those experienced before the start of the national emergency due to the covid-19 pandemic, he highlighted.

In addition, it was noted that during the first week of mandatory social isolation (from February 1 to 7, 2021), data traffic in fixed networks grew up to 13.33%, while in mobile networks, up to 9.94%, compared to days prior to the start of this measure (January 25 to 31), he said.

Applications

In the same week, the applications with the highest traffic consumption, on average, were those oriented to video consumption, such as Netflix, YouTube and Facebook, which, together, represented 81.22% of the total traffic carried on fixed networks, he indicated .

Meanwhile, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, on average, were the applications that consumed the highest traffic on mobile networks, together representing 63.16% of the total attended in that week, he reported.

The figures analyzed by Osiptel showed that these applications have the peculiarity of consuming large resources, being able to overload the network, especially during peak hours, he stressed.

In line with the provisions of the supervisory body in Resolution 0035-2020-PD / Osiptel, and with the current Network Neutrality standard, during the state of national emergency, companies must manage traffic on their networks from 08:00 at 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, he mentioned.

This, in order to avoid their saturation, prioritizing applications and services that facilitate activities related to productivity, such as telework, telehealth and tele-education, he said.

Solidarity use of the network

Similarly, Osiptel reiterated its recommendations on the solidarity use that users should make of public telecommunications services, prioritizing, during working hours, the use of the Internet for teleworking, telehealth and tele-education.

In that sense, he invoked the population to use the internet for entertainment (streaming, video games) in hours of less traffic, that is, after 9:00 p.m.

As well as, avoid downloading large files and share only those absolutely necessary, and the use of instant messaging such as SMS, WhatsApp and Messenger, among others, he pointed out.
