DARMSTADT – From Monday, May 11th, the municipal funeral halls in Darmstadt can be used again for funeral services under strict conditions. The seating is set up so that there is a minimum distance of 1.5 meters between the chairs. The city also said that the minimum distance should be observed when entering and leaving the mourning hall and going to the burial site.

Saying goodbye is even harder

“For the bereaved of the deceased, the use of our funeral halls, which will be possible again from May 11, is an important message, as it will be even more difficult to say goodbye if there is no adequate opportunity to do so,” said Barbara Akdeniz (Greens), who is responsible for cemeteries. The space regulations in the funeral halls are limited by the distance regulations. There are 36 seats at the old cemetery, 35 seats at the forest cemetery, 15 seats at the Bessunger cemetery, 24 seats at the Arheilger Friedhof, 28 seats at the Wixhäuser Friedhof and 30 seats at the Eberstädter Friedhof. If more mourners come, they could take part in the celebration outside the mourning hall, observing the minimum distance, said Akdeniz. The staff of the green space office will be sensitive and careful to ensure that the minimum distance between two mourning societies that meet in the area of the mourning hall is maintained, announced the head of department. The musical framing of the funeral service is of course possible, but the mourners should refrain from singing.

The undertaker must keep a list of attendance for the mourners, stating their first and last name, address and telephone number. The list was to be kept confidential for a period of one month and to be sent to the health department on request or to be destroyed after the specified period, it said.
