On Thursday, Daniel Pietta returned to his living room as part of the Germany Cup at the international ice hockey match against Russia. For the first time since his involuntary departure from the penguins, the Krefeld ice hockey veteran went on the ice in front of spectators in the Yayla Arena. Most recently, the Krefeld ice hockey fans had the opportunity to see their favorite live on March 8, 2020 in the last game of the season between the Pinguine and Munich.

The return of the idol who was deported in the summer of 2020 would have deserved a larger setting. Only 1,560 spectators were counted in the wide area of the arena. If you put the volume of the fan chants right, almost a third of them were fans of the Russian team. “It’s a shame that the hall wasn’t so full, that was perhaps because of the unfavorable game date on a Thursday and it was still the carnival awakening,” said Pietta.

Nevertheless, it was a special experience for the soon-to-be-35-year-old striker to finally play again in front of fans in his hometown. “I was happy to see so many familiar faces in the stands. And it’s nice to know that all the fans are loyal to you. ”His family couldn’t be missing either:“ I got eight tickets, but maybe there were more people from my family in the stadium, ”said the national player.

Although Pietta has been playing for Ingolstadt since summer 2020, he felt at home in the stadium. “Actually everything has stayed the same here, I know every corner here. Only the cube is new. ”Because the German team uses the penguins’ cabin, national team supervisor Christian Menningen, who also works for the penguins, made sure that Pietta got its old seat. “The dressing room has been rebuilt a bit, but not that much has changed,” says the 103-time national player.

In terms of sport, he showed himself at his best in the 4: 3 win against Russia. He played in the first row with Leo Pföderl and the native Tönisvorster Marcel Nöbels and as a center he carried out the opening face-off in the arena. With two goals for Germany he was on the ice, with the goal to 3-2 for Germany he gave the template. “We had problems in the first ten minutes, but then we played good ice hockey for 50 minutes and deservedly won,” said Pietta about the appearance of the national team in his living room.
