Dangerous Crackdown: Nicaraguan Regime Arrests Four Priests in Two Days

Managua: The dictatorial regime led by Daniel Ortega arrested four priests in two days in Nicaragua. The whereabouts of the priests arrested on December 28-29 remain unknown. The administration was angered by the priests’ prayers for Matagalpa Bishop Rolando Alvarez, who was in prison. The arrest was made following this.

The Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Managua, Mon. Carlos Aviles, Parish Priest of Holy Christ in Esquipules, Fr. Hector Treminio, Vicar of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Diocese of Matagalpa, Fr. Fernando Calero has been arrested by the police for no reason. Meanwhile, Nicaraguan journalist and lawyer Martha Patricia has informed that another priest has been abducted by the police to an unknown location. Six Catholic priests have been arrested by the police in Nicaragua within a week.

On December 20, Bishop Isidoro del Carmen Mora of the Diocese of Siuna was arrested.

Besides this, the Vicar of Nindiri in Managua Archdiocese, Fr. Pablo Villafranca was arrested by the police on December 26. There is no information about his whereabouts. Managua Auxiliary Bishop Silvio Jose, who fled to the United States and lives in exile due to government persecution, condemned the incident. He took to social media ‘X’ to express his dismay at the unjust detention of priests by a criminal authoritarian regime.

Many innocent people are in detention in the country, including Matagalpa Bishop Rolando Alvarez, who was sentenced to 26 years in prison for treason for questioning the dictatorship. Due to the anti-democratic measures and dictatorship, the life of the citizens became difficult and the Catholic Church protested and angered the dictatorial regime.
