Damar Hamlin: NFL player awake after cardiac arrest

NFL player Damar Hamlin has been treated in the intensive care unit since January 2 of this year. It was during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals that Hamlin was hit hard in the chest by opponent Tee Higgins. The 24-year-old suffered cardiac arrest and had to be revived on the pitch during dramatic scenes.

This week’s reports on Hamlin’s condition tell us the situation is critical. On Wednesday, the US media and his family reported that he was still sedated.

Now it seems though like it’s going in the right direction. At 4:30 pm Thursday Swedish time, the Buffalo Bills arrived with a positive health update.

“With doctors caring for Damar Hamlin at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Damar has shown remarkable progress over the past 24 hours,” they write in a Twitter post, but explain that Hamlin’s condition remains critical:

“Despite the condition, he has been able to demonstrate that he has no neurological damage. His lungs continue to heal and he is making steady progress.”

Relatives also say Hamlin is no longer sedated and has been holding hands with his family, they said Cnn.

The news about Hamlin shocked american football. The 24-year-old and his family have received well wishes from around the world and opposing NFL players are showing their support by wearing Buffalo Bills jerseys.

Since Monday, fans have donated more than SEK 70 million to the Billsspelaren collection. Hamlin started fundraising in December with the aim of raising 26,000 kroner for children’s toys.
