Damage to shop premises after a nightly bomb crack in Venlo

In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, a thunderbolt was committed at an ATM in Blerick near Venlo across the border with the Netherlands.

Local residents were awakened around 3:30 am by a loud bang. Witnesses saw two people drive away on a scooter. It is not yet clear whether they have captured anything.

The perpetrators presumably placed explosives at the roller shutter that is closed to the ATM at night. The blow also caused damage to some surrounding (retail) buildings. According to the police, there were no injuries.

The police have cordoned off the area and started an investigation. The Defense Explosives Ordnance Disposal Service came on site to check whether there is still a risk of explosion. As a precaution, some local residents were temporarily evacuated from their homes.

The police are looking for witnesses who may have seen more. Even if there are camera images showing the squatters or perpetrators, the police are happy to view them.

In recent years, criminals have more often migrated to Germany to make explosive attacks, after various measures have been taken in the Netherlands.
