Creator of the world’s most famous cheat code in games deceased NOW

Kazuhisa Hashimoto, the founder of the famous ‘Konami code’, died at the age of 61. The Japanese game publisher Konami writes that down Twitter.

The Konami code is the best known cheat code in computer games. Hashimoto came up with the combination ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B, A, Start in 1986, when the programmer worked on a transfer of the game Gradius on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game console.

The former Konami programmer built in the code as a tool for testing Gradius, because he “obviously couldn’t finish the game”. For unclear reasons, the code remained in the final version of the game.

The code only really became known in Contra, which appeared on the NES in 1988. Players who entered the code received 30 extra lives.

The code ended up in more than a hundred games from Konami, including Castlevania– and Metal Gear Solidgames. Games from other publishers also adopted the code. He often delivered a small surprise or hidden message.
