Covid, index of contagion: Sicily is in the lead. “Ready to close”

The infections are growing in Sicily, with the island having the highest coronavirus transmissibility index in Italy. The mayor of Palermo and president of Anci Leoluca Orlando raises the alarm: “If infections increase, we are ready for new closures.”
Of particular concern are the outbreaks born in Catania and Ragusa by Sicilians returning from highly contagious countries such as Malta, Greece and Spain. And on this last front there is chaos on controls, between national and regional ordinances that provide for different procedures.

The infections on the island

Yesterday in Sicily there were 42 new positives, of which 5 were migrants. Yesterday the island was the fourth for new cases after Veneto, Lombardy and Liguria. In addition to the 16 in the capital, 8 new positives in Ragusa, 5 in Syracuse, 4 in Messina, 4 in Catania, 3 in Caltanissetta, 2 in Agrigento. In addition, the Ministry of Health reports that Sicily was the region with the highest contagion rate in Italy during the week, 1.40. In intensive care there are 6 patients, as in Veneto and slightly less than in Lombardy. While hospitalized patients with coronavirus symptoms remain stable at 42. Numbers that signal an alarm bell, because they are constantly growing at a rate similar to those in the North. The president of Anci fears new closures: “We cannot hide the concern for the increase in cases of Covid – 19 in Sicily, as well as in various areas of the country and Europe – says Leoluca Orlando – in the face of the risk of new mourning, the authorities are doing what is necessary to limit infections but once again compliance with the most basic prevention rules is essential, starting with wearing a mask and avoiding gatherings. In the face of further contagions, there would be a need for new closures and devastating blocks for our economy ».

Chaos Ordinances
One of the outbreaks that worries the most is that of Ragusa, with several boys who have returned from Malta and tested positive for the coronavirus. A thousand people from Malta arrive in Pozzallo every day with two hydrofoils, including tourists and returning Sicilians. Hence the ordinance signed on Wednesday by Governor Nello Musumeci which provides for a squeeze for those arriving in Sicily from Malta, Greece and Spain. Ordinance that takes effect from today and which provides for the quarantine for 14 days and buffer for Sicilians who return from these countries, while tourists are required to register with the “SiciliaSiCura” app to be tracked but no buffer. Is everything clear then? Absolutely not, because in the meantime yesterday the national ordinance signed by the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza took effect on the national territory, which provides swabs within 48 hours for those arriving from these countries (adding Croatia as well) and no quarantine. So from today which ordinance prevails? “We are constantly confronting Rome – says the regional councilor for health Ruggero Razza – we currently maintain our ordinance which provides for the quarantine for returning Sicilians and only tracking for tourists arriving from these countries. We will make a small correction to add Croatia as well. However, I repeat, even the ministry tells us that we can act as planned: the order of President Musumeci, providing for the quarantine for returning Sicilians, is more stringent than the national one. And tourists will be contacted by our medical units through the app and then monitored ».

No control
In this confused picture yesterday there was therefore no control. At Catania airport, for example, a flight from Greece landed and no one was registered. The same goes for the hydrofoil of the morning that from Malta docked in Pozzallo with 500 people on board. But in this case the mayor Roberto Ammatuna asked for an intervention by the prefect asking to swabs according to the national ordinance: after a summit in the prefecture, and in the absence of ASP swabs, for those who arrived from Malta to Pozzallo with the hydrofoil in the evening was at least required to register. In short, a great chaos.
